Description: A kildeer's call supposedly sounds like its name. I don't hear it, but I guess someone had to come up with a name for the bird. They hang around our pond's edge and walk the drainage ditches. Since they nest on the ground, I have to be very careful when mowing or weeding in flower beds. One made a nest right in the middle of a salvia greggii last year, and I couldn't weed around it for two months! Their cry is piercing, and constant when flying. You know when kildeers are going over!
