Blending the two flocks was a lot easier than we had anticipated. The young hens know their place, the older hens are tolerant of the young ones, and there has been no antagonism between the two groups. They seem to be getting along just fine.
Lucy is the nen with a red comb and wattles in the foreground--she is one of the "mature" ladies. Ruby, Rosie, and Bianca are near the outside door (they have bigger combs and wattles). The others are the girls. They just came in from an outside time in the enclosed coop.
I'm being very careful to take the girls out for a free range walk-about with one or two of the older hens. If I need to call them in the older hens make a beeline for the coop, and the younger follow. It's rather like having baby-sitters, or perhaps two doting grandmothers as helpers! |
