Because this tree flowers and develops it's fruit throughout autumn and winter, the fruit crop is subject to damage and loss if/when the temperatures fall much below freezing.

The flower clusters, which are not especially interesting otherwise, provide surprising interest when they release their ultra-fine pollen in little "clouds" that look like puffs of smoke.

Coleus plants are considered to be generally nontoxic to humans, although there ARE compounds in the sap that can cause bad reactions if ingested - so don't eat them!

*** They are, however toxic to pets***
If your pet ingests coleus plant parts, it can result in vomiting, diarrhea, and general "lack of wellness". If you suspect that your pet is suffering after ingesting coleus, contact your vet or call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center immediately.

This plant only blooms on the previous year's stalks, so while it can be grown as an herbaceous perennial at the upper limits of it's zone hardiness, it is unlikely to flower if it dies down in the winter.

I have grown this in zone 8 for a number of years, and have even enjoyed seeing it bloom after milder winters during which wrapping it with frost cloths was sufficient to keep it from sustaining frost/freeze damage - but in harsher winters, even with a good wrapping of frost cloths, it died back, but failed to bloom on that year's regrowth.
