Hi, just put a new lawn down 2 weeks ago, was wondering how long i leave it before i cut it. Thanks Tim
Hi Tim and WELCOME to Gardenstew. Now about your Lawn. You don't cut a new lawn for 6 weeks. This is so that the roots have plenty pf time to 'take.' If you cut it any sooner you'll probably end up pulling the roots out with your mower and then you'll end up with a rather patchy lawn. Do remember that during the six weeks you must water the new grass daily to help it get established. Hope you're enjoying our forums. Cheers.
And boy will it be long after 6 weeks. My previous neighbor cut down 2 HUGE oak trees and put down grass. Watered it daily and by the time he cut it, he could barely get his mower throuogh it.
I know the feeling!! It takes a long (well it feels like it) time to get grass to grow. By the time I cut it is very long!
Yes, by that point, the grass is usually quite long. I got impatient when growing a new lawn at one point and cut it a little earlier (about 4 weeks). That was a mistake! I had to go back and reseed a few spots.
You should leave the grass for around 5/6 weeks before cutting. It may seem like its too long but this will allow it to build up a good root system.
