I used to grow all my herbs outside but where I live now the cats next door like to use it for a poopy box and tear them up...SO now only the sage is outside and everything else is in pots in my sun porch..Also my basil kept getting eaten by bugs before i could eat it!
Mostly anywhere I have tomatoes or other veggies used in my wifes tomato sauce. So pretty much everywhere.
Here are pics of my herbs inside. They are inside and doing much better. I was having issues last summer with bugs getting to my herbs before I could use them. Also the neighbors cats used my herb garden as s poopy box. they are safer indoors. Although a little grasshopper got in and munched on my basil. When I saw him, he didn't last long!
I like the little basil sign as well. I was wondering if you could grow your herb indoors. I have seen beds or pots outside here but never saw anyone grow them inside. I am wanting to grow my own. Do I need to wait til spring now to plant them or can I start now?
I segment my garden and I do the same for herbs as well. However, I plan my arrangements in such a way that the herbs are planted around flowers and veggies because I read somewhere that the scents from herbs can actually chase away pests.
I don't doubt that certain scents can repel bugs and other critters that you do not want in your garden. I know that citronella will repel flying insects. There are other plants that do this sort of thing as well. I just do not know which plants are good to repel which critters. I did find out something interesting. I placed moth balls around the edge of my garden. Dogs, cats, and deer avoided it from then on.
I'm planning to swap most of my flower beds over to herbs, as they seem to be the thing that most wants to grow here. And I love the smells. But I have them tucked in everywhere I can.
