Hello, Anybody have their Strawberry Begonia/Geranium in a north window? Please tell me a Saxifraga stolonifera(?) can thrive in a north window. I can't wait to get my hands on one AND have it in the living room with me, at least in spring and summer. My first post, so be gentle. (Sorry if this is a double-post, I meant to post it in houseplants, but I think I accidently posted it in the garden section.)
Hi SueBee :-D I love your avatar!! I've never seen the begonia you are talking about. I bet it's beautiful!! I imagine your plant would do ok in the North window, at least until summer hits. Where are you in Colorado? I graduated from Rangely High School many years ago... Deanna :-D
Wow, Deanna, Rangely - what a hoot! I live in Grand Junction. And thank you for the kind reply. As for the plant, it's funny because it's not a strawberry plant, it's not a geranium and it's not a begonia! I think the leaves look a bit like strawberry leaves with a mother plant which produces runners and then baby plants that hang from that. Mmm,mmm how I wish for one that thrives. My mom can grow em like mad, but I've committed terrible things agains the poor babies. Still, I can't wait to get my hands on one!
Hi there SueBee. Saxifraga stolonifera pefers sun/semi shade and well drained soil. It is a hardy plant which flowers in May/June. We call it Mother of Thousands here in Scotland.
Well shoot, I found a halfway decent pic on Google, began to upload photo here - and then I was foiled because there is a box I must check that says "I own full copyright of this photo". As it is, I have committed manslaughter against one ( actually two) of these innocent plants; I'd better not make things worse with copyright infringement stuff.
Hey SueBee! You got me started on a begonia kick!!!! I have some starting in my office Cross your fingers, I hope they grow
Yay Stratsmom, hope yours does great. They are so lovely. I know Mom's was brimming over with cute little plantlets everywhere. Mine always sort of rotted and died out as if overwatered even though I was extremely careful. Sure hope I get it right someday - if I can just get my hands one one. Also, I was thinking maybe it would be fun to grow one in a big (3 gallon?) clear glass storage jar, the type that looks like a big clear cookie jar. Do a terrarium thing with it and set that on a stool. I'm seriously thinking about doing that with a grow light over it, wonder how that would do? Be fun to find out anyway, huh.
Funny you would mention a terrarium :-o I've been thinking of that myself!! I'm itching to plant something so bad that I'm desperately seeking little plants or seeds or tubers or... We woke up to snow again this morning. My only planting will be indoors :'(
Yes! Me, too!! I have been just itching to try a terarrium (I can never remember how many r's and where to put them). ) A few years ago I kept my pet Betta in a 5 gallon tank. After he passed away I got rid of that little tank. It was like brand new and I am kicking myself all over the place because that tank would be perfect for a terrrrrarrrium.
I feel your pain Been there, done that Last year I found a really cool old fish bowl at the good will. I planted coleus seeds in it and then gave it away
