My Miltonia Orchids need help. All the new foliage is small, tightly folded and crinkled into zig-zags. Any flower spikes get trapped inside the folded leaves and wither. I've tried spraying with soft water but it makes no difference. They look quite awful. If anyone has any suggestions as to cause or cure, I would be very grateful. Eddie.

It sounds likely that the humidity has been too low whilst the foliage has been developing and the sheaths have become dried and not allowed for the leaves to stretch out as they grow, once it is damaged there is not a lot you can do except try and raise the humidity either by using trays with stones in and water just below stone line with the pot stood on top or a humidifier, on average the humidity for orchids needs to be around 50% with different species needing higher or lower it would be an idea to google the requirements of your individual plant as I do not know the exact humidity this genre needs but It is almost definately a humidity problem whilst the foliage was developing that has caused this problem. Sorry I cant be much more help.I think the only thing you can do is raise humidity so that the next growths develop normally.

Many thanks for your reply. I had thought that humidity might be the problem, but I started spraying too late, so I will try standing the plants on pebbles in water. They are on the kitchen windowsill directly behind the sink, so I thought that would be humid enough - evidently not. Eddie.

Do not have the base of the pot in the water just on the pebbles with the water below it as if the water is constantly on the base of the pot the roots will more than likely rot, there are mixed thoughts on the value of humidity trays but in my opinion if its the best you can do it is better than nothing.

No pebbles at all......Mine drink like a fish.

never rotted yet. Pot sets right in a plastic catch thingy.

    Never dry is my method.
