Well first of all CHF, welcome to the Stew from Texas. Someone should be along in a bit to help you out with your planting delimina.
well thank you i feel kinda dumb i planted corn in the jiffy pot so i think it will grow to fast to get it out in the garden in May :'(
Hi! It's difficult to know things about gardening and there isn't anything wrong with asking. I planted things in peat pots which are like your jiffy pots but I have a little plastic cold frame to hold them. You are right, you can't let the seeds dry out. If they get dry take the lid off and water them and put the lid back on. After they start to grow you will have to leave the lid off. I don't think it's too early to start plants for mid or late May even. They will be a good size to transplant. Of course, if you used very small pots they may outgrow the pots and you'll have to find something bigger to move them into. Those plastic drink cups or even foam drink cups would work for that if you need to move them. I don't tend to spray my plants. I just pick the bugs and worms off and squish them. Good luck with your garden. dooley
Well I think you are doing just great, seeing as this is only your 2nd garden! Good for you! You will get lots of good advice from here, that's for sure. Many wonderful gardeners so happy to share their wisdom with us! From me, I wanted to say hello and welcome from Maryland. Good luck with your pots and plants!
well thanks looks like a good family here I was reading some where that i can put in 4 of my corn in 5gal bucket and then in may transplant them Your right i think it might out grow them i do have more soil hmm Thanks..
The soil needs to be kept moist and warm. I use the indoor green houses and you want to wet the soil before you plant the seeds and then make sure it keeps moist. Not muddy but moist. Put them in a warm place and check them every day or so so make sure the soil hasn't dried out. I use UV lamps and heating pads underneath. The perfect temp is around 70 degree. Check out my blog to see the set up. I started my tomatoes back in February. I will be starting cukes soon.
Oh boy am i in big trouble this morning went to work and came home to see this needless to say i took it off my heat register and now i don't know what to do looks like all my seeds are growing up fast.. What to do?? might have to throw them out. oh boy.. LOL..
Not sure where in michigan your at-I'm in the northern mich. PLEASE DON'T THROW THEM OUT. I know we have about another month maybe more before anything goes outside. But I always start my tomatoes inside anywhere from 50 to 75 plants. If you have to, just transplant them into something a little bigger until the weather warms up. I already have many flowers up (from see) so I'm planning on moving them to another room so that I can start more seeds.
There isn't anything wrong with them...just place them in a cooler spot and they will slow the growth. Once they have a second set of leaves start giving them some fertilizer and they will green up. MAke sure they are in a sunny window and the soil stays damp.
will they last till end of may? there is corn and cucs and watermelon the watermelon has not come up yet. should i be worryed? do i put in bigger pe pods? lol help.. thank you every one. Also there are 3 in one pod they are all about the same size should i take 2 out? thank you.
they are getting bigger as we speak off the heat and everything i am getting little scarred End of May in long away..
You are going to have to transplant into large containers and start giving them fertilizer...then they should be fine.
THIS IS DAY7 I still think they will be way to big to plant end of May you see there are 3 in one pod so should i kill 2 and just have one? thanks for being so understanding
Many gardeners plant more than one seed per pod as you have done. They then pick out the weaker ones leaving only the strongest seedling to grow on. I, on the other hand, can't bear to do this myself and let them all continue to grow and then I share them with friends and neighbours.
