I have successfully grown hardy hibiscus from seed.

I planted some seed from my mom's plant directly outside and withing 2 weeks they were up. They bloomed the following year and 5 years later are monster clumps.

You could give them a head start indoors and you probably could scar the seeds to speed up germination, but I didn't have to.

Going to plant some Luna seeds this spring.

Hibiscus has a habit of waiting until well into the fall before those seed pods will be ripe. You'll know when they are ready when they decide to pop open and scatter seeds around.

Rosebud, my hibiscus self seed all over the place in my garden and I have been able to transplant them successfully which is just fab as I love them! I believe the seed needs stratifying or leaving in the cold to break it's dormancy, I have never physically gathered the seeds and sown them so I couldn't say how long they would take to germinate, but during spring and summer lots will appear under my parent plants.

    hibiscus

I just planted some hibiscus seeds a week ago and they are up about 2in.I started not to plant them because people said how hard it was, But I thought I would be brave and just do it. And now I'm glad I did.And I'm so proud my Hibiscus Tree made it through the winter, My hibiscus bush made it to, and looks better than it did when it was planted outside last summer. And something l've never been able to do is keep a ponsetta living past Christmas and mine is still living and blooming, can you believe it ? that's good for me, :D

I planted in a pot some seeds my dad gave me last year. I did this a few weeks ago, but between then and now we've had a bit of snow, some frost and overall chilly temperatures. I haven't seen any growth yet, but I hope to get some. That's cool that you all seem to have had success growing them from seed.

Can Hibiscus be grown from seed

It depends on the species. Are you looking for the tropical Hibiscus that are sold as potted plants, that are not hardy unless you are in the deep south? If so, then no. If you are looking for Hibiscus moscheutos, hardy to zone 5, try Bupee.com and buy seeds of Pink Swirl or Luna Mix.
