Doing gardening for the first time in a new place. We are in the woods, near the water in rural VA. They have large very flat green leaves and no flowers on these plants (yet?). I have no idea what they are so I pulled one up and it had a large root growing horizontally from it. Here are some pics... grow in a group ( photo / image / picture from katyadraven's Garden ) very flat ( photo / image / picture from katyadraven's Garden ) root ( photo / image / picture from katyadraven's Garden ) Thank you!! They look very like iris to me Katy. Those nobbly roots are caled rhizomes. Here is a website that shows both the leaves and the base of the plants. Hopefully you will be able to see them enough to confirm what your plants are. http://www.gardenersworld.com/how-to/pr ... es-divide/
They look like happy healthy iris to me too. Where you are, they will start sending up nice buds on tall stalks in the next couple of weeks. I can't wait till you find out what color(s) they are! Lucky you! Leave them be if you can -- or let them finish blooming before you move them.
It's an Iris, probably a Bearded Iris. From the size of the leaves I would say it won't be too much longer before you start seeing a swelling on one leaf. That will seperate from the leaf and become the stalk that will hold the Iris flower.
Thanks guys! That pic definitely looks like what we have in the yard. I can't wait to see them bloom either!
