We are in the Virgin Islands and everyone says our "walking lilies" are really orchids. Does anyone know? They form baby plants on stems where the flowers were (yellow) and then fall over and "walk" down the hill, rooting where they land. They grow in the soil and resemble a gladiolus leaf and stem but have oncidium-like small yellow flowers.
They do look like small orchids mine are not yellow but are so very pretty. They are tuber like roots soooo I think they are a type of Iris.Orchid blooms last more than one day.
I've never actually heard of walking lilies but I have heard of walking iris. Here are a couple of pictures for you. Are these the plants you have by any chance?
Yes! The yellow iris look just like mine. I will try to photo them tomorrow and post. Thanks, you guys!
Yes that is mine too but mine is more on a light beige.I do love them.Cajunbelle sent me the one I have.
The Walking Iris is in the same Order as Orchids but they are in different Families Walking Iris Order: Asparagales Family: Iridaceae Subfamily: Iridoideae Tribe: Mariceae Genus: Neomarica Sprague Orchid Order: Asparagales Family: Orchidaceae Juss. So I think it means that no your Walking Iris is not an Orchid.
