I saw this plant the other day and decided I wanted it in my yard. But I can't seem to find it at any stores. I was hoping somebody may be able to tell me its name. Whereabouts do you live, Ghostrider? I'm no good with shrubs etc. but might find out something if I knew your zone.
It looks like an Echium sort to me. They are certainaly not native to here, but we see them as container plants on terraces and balconies.
Southern California. I found these in the city of Thousand Oaks. Its maybe 20-30 miles from the coast.
I looked in my Western Garden book and found them on page 323. It says they are excellent for seacoast garden. They are drought tolerant and need little or no water in mild summer climates and weekly irrigation during the summer in hotter areas. You should have access to a Western Garden book at a library or bookstore in your area. dooley Oh, they are Echium but it lists several species so I don't know which one. They do get abundant seeds so maybe you could ask for a few.
Thanks for the info guys. My mom had me email a friend of hers that is pretty familiar with the plant life in this region. This is what she said. Hi Eric- Yes, It is Echium candicans. Classified a perennial/biennial, as it is short-lived but reseeds itself. It likes full sun, good drainage and little to no water once established. A very handsome shrub! Hope this was of help.. Andrea Just in case anybody else was wondering.
