Hi Tiffany, welcome to GardenStew from north Texas. A new garden area is always exciting and scary.

I would suggest that you pay attention to the shade and sun pattern in your yards...full sun is 6+ hours of sun per day, less than that and many perennials won't flourish. Check out garden centers in your area to see what plants they recommend and have your soil tested for pH and any nutrient deficiency. While at the garden centers make a list of the plants that you really like then check out where they fill do best in your yard.

From Maryland, hello! Have fun planning out your garden! I grow my herbs in big pots -- that might be a good place to start while you're tracking the sun/shade, planning and scoping out what will grow best for you. Two different climates, NYC and Oregon -- different lifestyles too, huh?
