It has long and thin "waxy" leaves, as you can probably tell from the photographs. The leaves come out at varying angles, two at a time usually. It's very easy to take care of, it has very unusual roots, and when I water it, there is an odd smell? If flowers once a year and stays blooming for about ten weeks - the flower itself is about the size of a fist, and is located in in the center. Any ideas? That was one of my original guesses, as well, but the flower looks nothing like the pictures from what I've looked up. The flower is more of a bromeliad...
Clivia is my guess, as well. Clivia seem to be yellow or orange. Do you remember more about the flowers?
Clivia was what I thought when I first saw it too. Do the flowers look like this: http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl= ... 0%26um%3D1 I think there is also a yellow variety.
