Hi Everyone, does anyone know anything about chinese ground orchid seed pods ? Mine are green pods should I open them up and take the seeds out now or wait until the pod dries out, Someone sent them to me and I'm just not sure what to do ,I appreciate your help thank you Margie moderator's note: added a more descriptive title to topic
Wait for the pods to dry, they will break easily then. Read a bit about this orchid before sowing. It can be tricky as seeds seem to need help of a fungus to germinate. Good luck!
Bletilla striata is its proper name. All orchid seeds are incredibly difficult for the amateur to gorw. they have no food reserves in the seed so need food on germionation. the trouble is that they get that food from an association with a particular fungus found in the soil. Without it, they do not germinate. Your best bet would be to sow the seed when the pod splits, in the soil around an existing plant where the fungus might be in existence. Otherwise you are in to agar jelly in a petrie dish with the correct nutrients added.
