    chocolate sunflowers-
ordered them from Louisiana, and got ten seeds. When I planted them, all but one plant got destroyed, (thanks to my 17 year old :-? ). The one that did make it was more beautiful then I could ever imagine. Stands about 4 1/2 ft. tall, with twenty plus blooms on a bush that got about 2 1/2 feet wide. The bloom itself is about 5+ inches a crossed, with a thin yellow ring around the seed head in center of the flower. petals go from yellow by seed head, to deep red to soft chocolate brown to bright red again. But get this, the flowers actually smell reminiscent of chocolate! I was more then amazed!! I have had great success with the seeds that i have harvested, and am willing to trade for something wonderful :-D , this plant was grown in Northern Oregon, with an average rainy/sunny summer.

Thank goodness one survived so that you'll have pleny of seeds for next year. The flower certainly sounds lovely and, if possible, could you show us a photograph so that we can all drool over it? :-D

They sound great...but I know my dogs would be attracted to anything chocolate...the lab eats just about anything and after today , my little dog ate a squirrel. Could you post a picture next summer? It sounds beautiful.

    Sounds Beautiful

Oooh . . . it sounds so beautiful. It would be great if you could post a picture! I let my little boy plant sunflowers (not the chocolate variety) in patio pots this summer, and they all came up. They are just such bright, happy flowers, and the birds sure love the seed!

    Thanks for sharing,

    Lady Jane

I have never seen a chocolate sunflower before. They must be fascinating to have in a garden.
