I think this is the right place to put this. I hope a lot of you gardeners see it. I just thought it might help if I added a comment about the deer and ground hog problems. I have used a "Deer Scarecrow" that I purchased and I have had great success keeping these two guys out of my flower beds. The scarecrow detects movement and shoots a stream of water quite a ways out into the yard and in a half circle. I have used it for two years now and feel it is safe to recommend to other gardeners. I leave it on almost all the time especially when away on vacation. It runs off of a 9v battery and costs around $60 dollars depending on where you find it. I have two of them, one for the front yard flower bed and one for the back. It helps if you organize the plants they like to munch on the most all in one flower bed together and put other things together that they don't bother in other areas.
Cool. Sounds like it could be a "blast" to leave on when the mother-in-law visits! Or the postman, or the meter-reader, or the bill collector, or the nosey neighbor, or the moochy sister.....
LOL Hank! I am pretty good at remembering to turn the water off when company is here, but my husband got hit one time. He remembers to check now....hehe My grand kids think it's fun to run past it, naturally.... Stew, it does hit the plants but not too hard to hurt them, but not enough to really give them a good drink either. I have an attachment on my hose so I can run two hoses off the same line so I don't have to keep unhooking it every time I want to water with my sprinkler somewhere else in the yard.
Another good deer deterant is human hair. If you have a local barbershop or beauty parlor, ask them if you can have their hair scraps. Just sprinkle the hair around the are where the deer like to munch and the human smell will keep them away. Also for groundhogs, roll 3 or 4 mothballs down their holes. They will push them back out, and just roll them back in. Soon they will get tired of the smell and just leave. If nothing else it keeps them busy and away from the garden! Do you want a non-chemical mouse poison ? Get some of the instant mashed potatos and put it out for them dry. They will eat it and once the moisture in the digestive system hits it, it will swell up and kill them. Won't harm Tabby if he happens across one and decides to munch out!
