hi we will be building a house soon and have no idea about themes. We are doing our back garden and bathrooms in a contemp style and have been told you should keep that theme throughout your house, but i want to do the kids bedrooms a traditional style, and i dont know what is best to do. tracy
I am of the opinion that it is your house, do it the way you want. Besides, a child's room shouldn't be the same as an adults, it should be bright, fun and totally interesting. It should reflect their likes and personality in not only colors but decorations. If a boy wants a fire engine bed go for it, a princess bed for a girl..how cool is that. If the kids are old enough, let them choose the furniture they like, they are the ones who will be living in that room so it would be nice if it was a room they liked and could be comfortable using. If it doesn't match the rest of the house you can always close their door when company comes.
I live in a 17th century cottage and although the outside of the house is very traditional the inside is not. When my children were young I allowed them to pick their own wallpaper, colours etc. Go for whatever you and your family want after all it's you that has to live with the decor you choose no-one else. :-D
I say mix it up as well...you will be the one seeing it 24/7. Make it your own. And have fun doing it!
forget those flashy home magazines and create that house as your own home. and oh, time to get creative this time around
Many designers do not consider it a no-no to have multiple themes. Usually, however, if going from contemporary to traditional there will be some sort of transitional space or elements, but like everybody else said, it's your house...design it however you like.
