I planted a lovely Columbine earlier this year just as it was coming into bloom. It produced beautiful, delicate salmon pink and lemon blooms, but once the first flush of flowers died off, all subsequent buds have dried up before opening. The leaves look healthy enough - does anyone know what's going wrong? I would be grateful for any advice. Cheers - Jackie
Where is your location Teddy? I live in Ohio and I have quite a few Columbines planted. I've noticed this year though that one of my plants wasn't doing well, the flowers were drying up like you said. After some investigation I realized it was because it was getting full son where my other Columbines were in shade/part sun. I'm gonna dig that one up this Fall and replant it to a little shadier area.
Thanks Gardening Maniac ... I think you may have solved it for me! I just assessed the part of the garden where my Columbine is planted and it gets the sun all day. I think I will move it at the weekend to a shadier bit and see how it fares. I'll let you know how we get one. If it ever flowers again I'll post a pic and give you the credit for reviving this litte beauty (it really is a most delicate and beautiful little flower). I'm in England by the way, in the North West. We're having some lovely sunny weather at the moment Thanks again
Your welcome Teddy, I'm willing to bet if you move the fella to a shadier area, he's gonna reward you with some pretty flowers next Spring! Can't wait to see the pictures! :-D Could you send us some of your lovely sunny weather? Has rained for days here now Pondering the thought of building a big umbrella to put over my gardens so I can get out there and work in them!
This is kinda funny, I found one in my new yard and moved it to a diffrent spot where it also about died. And I did move it from a part shade spot to a sunny spot. DARN
Oh no Jim, move it back to the shade! It'll be much happier And they also like well drained soil...good luck with it!
columbine hi i was reading this site about those pretty plants, i want to ask a question,im trying to raise some to.what kind of soil do they seem to like the best,,,thanks
