From what I have read, Stevia is very difficult to start from seed. A few sites I have looked at recommend just buying the plants from a garden center if you can find them.

You might find this Germination study interesting and maybe helpful.

I realize this is disappointing but Stevia seed has a low germination rate. You just have to keep trying.
I gave up and bought a plant. It's growing indoors.

However, I'm wondering if that method where you germinate the seed in paper towels or coffee filters might work better than putting them in soil. Then, you'd move the seedlings to pots.

My understanding is that stevia can be very temperamental plants anyway. Mine is scraggly but not dead. So, I'm hoping to set it outdoors in the spring.

Your best bet would probably be to find a local plant seller in your area, garden center, plant nursery, etc. Ask them if they can get some Stevia seeds for you.

If you have no one local to contact maybe you could email some of the online plant and seed companies and ask if they can mail seeds to China. Each country has it's own regulations concerning what type of plant material (including seeds) that they will or will not allow to be imported or exported.

chattemao, do you get any seed catalogs there from the states? or can you go online to these catalogs maybe and order?

there's a three companies here that sell the seed and plants, Seeds of Change, and Richter's (4th title down on link) that is in Canada, and Nichol's Garden Nursery (page 15). i have ordered things online and through the mail from all and they are very dependable.

i just wanted to add that i have never grown Stevia from seed. from what i understand, growing Stevia from seed is risky. in otherwords, you don't know how sweet it's going to be from seed, cause it varies. with plants, you know right off at the start.

also, you should never let the plants bloom. once they do, the leaves lose their sweetness and may become bitter. i've only read this. i never have let mine bloom.

i ordered a Sweet Sixteen plant from Nichol's many years ago and still have it and have made starts from it. it has to stay in pot indoors in the winter months. it's very sweet, but does have an aftertaste.

I orderd a couple Crazy Sweet Stevia plants last spring from Richter's. they are very sweet and have no aftertase at all, just pure sweetness!

I myself just recently bought a stevia plant from online. Although I have seeds too, (also bought locally online). I bought one plant also when it became available. And I have just ordered 2 more, before the stock runs out. The one I got doesn't have any aftertaste either.

    https://www.gardenstew.com/threads/help-stevia-plant-in-distress.44597/

Likewise, I too never bothered having a credit card, (nonsense concept specifically designed to put people in debt). Plus the process of getting a credit card too is such a headache... Debit card is okay, which I do have, but never use it online, (due to my concerns of online fraud). Also most of everything listed online is usually for the continental United States & Europe only, (and they don't want to bother with rest of the world anyway) - So that's why I too said #$®%¶∆©π√ to those businesses, and pledged that they also will now never get any of my money.

Anyway I have a stevia plant at home now, it's damaged from shipment. But I'm hopeful it will survive. And I'm going to plant seeds as well, plus I've ordered 2 more plants which are on the way. So by early next year, I hope to have a healthy crop in my own house - As I want to cut the intake of sugar in my household forever!

This is a very rare plant over here in Pakistan. And those that exist, (exactly like in China), they are cultivated by big companies. So they will never let anyone else have this plant, or it's seeds - As it's a cash crop, obviously...

But I have it, and I will now do by best to propagating it - Plus when I start getting seeds from it, I will share them with anyone who wants them. FREE FOR EVERYONE WHO WANTS! As I now want to destroy the monopolies of big companies. So I'll mail you some to China as well. Then you too can do the same.
