Sjoerd, I tried last year to post pictures and was unable to do so. Maybe I will give it another try this year. If at first you don't succeed, try, try again! New Grow, maybe you can carmelize onions and both you and your wife will like them, aye? I find that hanging the onions in an area where fresh air can be all around them until the stems dry and turn brown works for me. Then I cut the stems off to about 2 inches above the onion top. I place them either in a mesh bag - one that oranges or grapefruit comes in - or in a cardboard box, cut down so its about 2 to 3 inches high on the sides. If I use a mesh bag, I hang the bag on a curtain rod or any place where the air flows around. If I use a box, I turn the onions ever so often, like maybe every two weeks or so. Some will eventually sprout, but very few decay or rot. The sprouting ones we chop and freeze or use right away. Soon, maybe early March, I will plant some lettuce, peas, spinach, broccoli and more onions in little pots and await the opening of the Spring season. Sjeord, what is Lathyrus? Flowers? Food?
Hello NEWGROW--How long will they store, you asked. Well, I string mine up and leave them hang. They have been stored this way for five months so far. I suspect that if one stores them in a ventilated, cool and dark place (like a cellar) they may well stay good longer.....but I do not have that option. That's right, G-pains: never give up. I would enjoy seeing your pics. BIITA-- Waving back Hahaha...I'll have to check the postal rates. It's so good to see you again.
Hello again, G-Pains: I forgot to answer your question: "What are Lathyrus?"-- They are "sweet peas". Please excuse me.
Being that it is getting pretty warm here arond onion harvest time it's a risk that the pulled bulbs may get scalded from the sun unlesscare is taken. What I do, and it's been done down here for..well..years.. is to lay the pulled plants in rows, flat on the ground, and make another layer below the bilbs so that foliage from the second row shades the actual bulbs ahead of them.. and so on. As soon as the leaves get fairly dry I bundle them with twine and hang in a shady but airy location until fully "cured", as other have mentioned. A scalded onion has a soft, mushy white patch.. it will rot sooner or later. Because of our dry climate "bolting" continues to vex my efforts. When the seed head appears I nip it off, give the plant a few weeks, then pull.. This is why I need the sun to dry what is still pretty green. The onions seem to last very well desiote this and the "core" that the bolting produces is a nuisance, but that's all. This year I'm planting a month earlier to see if I can better my results.
Thanks again sjoerd! You answered my question. Now it will be time to try it out this year, it will be my first. G-Pains We do like them caramelized! I just like onions all the way around. To be frank. I sometimes make 2 different dinners just to make the wife happy. It's a give take/ love hate thing. (Food wise not relationship!) She likes certain things she grew up on and I like... Well bout everything I have tried.. Been told the other day to her folks I was a garbage disposal! But I only weigh 140lbs.
Sjoerd I'm sorry I went away so long.I went to my cousins in Cold Springs for about 3 days and came back.My computer decided to act up .I have been 3 days getting it back.I had to restore it.Darn computers anyway.I'm going to go get me a new laptop.I think. Let me know how your trial onions do.I think you will be surprised.
Sorry to hear your compi has been acting-up, Glenda. I hope that you had a good visit at your cousin's. Is spring coming along where you live?
Yes,I think spring is near but we usually get a bad cold front before Easter every year.We have to cover everything to keep it from freezing or frost bite.Dooley's Quince shows we will get one before to long. Its in full bloom. That scares me.
I remember this post as it was started back in 2010. now 2011 of June. I am moving some onions around as they are not getting enough sun and trying them out in our greenhouse, hoping they'll get more sun there. Its been quite a while since I posted But I knew right where I wanted to come when I needed help with doing my onions.
It sure is good to see you again, Petunia. I had been wondering how you were getting along. I hope that you can get those onions of yours sorted. Do post a follow-up once you have got them under control, Oké?
Onion plants are too cheap here not to use them in spring. Just harvested all mine. Nice crop this year. Fall I use sets. Had fresh green onions most all last winter !!
