I just finished adding a new post to my blog if you want to take a peek. And in it, I happened to mention that rattlesnakes were probably moving about. Spoken too soon. My neighbor found one underneath his trash barrel and my cat, Theo was most interested. Sadly the snake had to be "removed" but now I am on the lookout whenever I am doing anything in my garden. moderator's note: removed website link, see point 1.1 of usage rules
I have a pet snake but, thankfully, it's not a rattler. Do be careful when out in the garden as we don't want you to get bitten.
I haven't found any rattlers while gardening, thank goodness. Don't think I would go back outside again if I did.
Living in S. CA with my house right at the opening of canyon and surrounded by hills, means living with them and of course coyotes. We have a a lot of rain this year which also means there will be lots of Cottontail rabbits that the coyotes eat and prey for rattlers, too. Given this, hopefully me and my neighbors won't be running into any of them in our yards, but we do have to be careful.
Please send me a few of your degrees, but please keep the rattlesnake. I don't like them much I'm afraid.
Am sure glad this part of Washington doesn't have rattlers. Our little gartner snakes are fine. Your heat sounds like you might soon be "real warm". We are dealing with spring time critters too. The possum was back and the dogs cornered it into a little "pot pond". Fortunately the "girls" don't know what to do with a possum so it escaped once I got hold of the dogs. Now the deer in the neighbors yard after work last night caught me off-guard. What are deer doing in our urban area? When the dogs barked it just looked at us and continued what it was about. Guess fences make us good neighbors.

Since it finally was warming up here in the Houston area too, I saw some baby snakes while working in my yard the other day. Just the harmless Gartner Snakes but like always, a snake makes me getting chills. I have never seen any Rattle Snakes or Cotton Mouth around here - Thank God! What I see once in a while are Gartner Snakes or the also harmless Brown Snake and Rat Snake. But you never know, since they build so many new housing editions around here and the natural living area for any kind of wild life gets smaller and smaller, one of these days we might see venomous snakes in our yards too. But no matter if venomous or non-venomous snakes, I leave them all alone and never had any problems before. Being cautious always will help preventing bad things to happen.
I have never seen rattlers in my yard here in San Diego, but I have seen them three times while hiking - twice on Cowles Mountian in San Carlos (an SD Neighborhood) and once at Twin Peaks in Poway. The Twin Peaks one was the biggest and scariest, pretty big and rattling up a storm!
