    hey linda,
not trying to disappoint you, but at least here in romania, magnolia is almost impossible to root from cuttings.
i haven't heard of anyone rooting cuttings.
maybe this is just a rumour spread around by nurseries so they can sell their trees expensive.
we have some huge magnolia trees around but never thought of taking some branches and try to root them ???
    BUT...good LUCK!

I've tried several times starting magnolia from cuttings... they seem to do okay for a bit then die off. I'd recommend just buying one if she really wants it.

what was funny, from a garden i took a small branch, definitely a magnolia, but was not in bloom so no idea what kind. potted it. this was last summer i guess.
then, leaves died off, but the top buds remained green till now. in spring.
i was so happy it took... as it was green. but not opening the buds, no leaves showing up...
but once i just lost my patience and just yanked it out and there were no roots at all, no sign of ever deciding to root - in fact the stem was kinda rotten.
i was really surprised to see it stay green for so many months... without roots!
    really funny!
