Please help me ID this plant. It was one of the first to come up this spring and is now blooming. In the summer it doesnt bloom but the foliage still grows and turns a rusty color. Anyone know what it is? Thanks.
Thanks Sjoerd, I had moved last summer and have had little time to visit Garden Stew. I now have a new garden to take care of that someone else planted..so I need a few plants ID'd. I have a new little shop that's been consuming alot of my time. If anyone's on Facebook..I created a page recently for it. Have a look and become a fan..I need fans : ) http://www.facebook.com/pages/Hermann-M ... 483?ref=ts
What an interesting name for your shop, Joann. Distelfink is the name of a bird here. We spell it differently, but pronounce it the same. Translated: Distel = Thistle .... (f)vink = Finch. The distelvink also has the name of, "Putter" here. A very lovely little songbird.
I have just found some seedlings of this in my cuttings frame of all places. I remember vaguly leaving a plant in there a couple of years ago.
Sjoerd..you're exactly right. The distelfink is a Pennsylvania German bird found on their folk art here from memories of home. Here's some folk art I painted in Pennsylvania German style, including 2 distelfinks.
