Hi everyone, I'm new to the veggie garden really, So could someone please tell me the best and easiest way to plant pots. I would like to have the little new pots. what would I have to do to grow them?Do pots. have to be on hills? Do they have seeds or do you plant the pots. in the ground? I'm sorry I know I'm full of questions but I really don't know,:-? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Margie
If there is a garden center near you, buy seed potatoes. These are small potatoes that have not been treated to retard growth. Each potato will have several eyes. The eyes are what you cut off along with a small amount of the white part. Each eye will produce a potato plant. I plant mine in a row about three feet apart and 2 inches deep, or you can do hills if you wish depending on space available. Then just water and wait for growth. Some add soil about halfway through the growing period. After plants bloom and start to die back they are usually ready to dig. You can dig new potatoes usually when the blooms start then just cover the roots back and the plant will continue to make.
Planting potatoes Hi Margie Its great to ask questions especially when you can get some answers. Like all gardening, there are many opinions and ways to do things. If you haven't planted yet don't delay, you won't be eating early summer potatoes, but should have some by fall if you plant now. I like to plant whole seed potatoes about fist size, Seed potatoes ( photo / image / picture from Farmer_Dave's Garden ) seed potatoes can be purchased from seed companies and in the right season from feed stores, nurseries and some hardware stores. Our local feed store still has some in. If you just plant non organic eating potatoes from the market they may not work as they often treat them so they won't sprout. Plant your seed potatoes 1 ft apart in rows 3ft apart in furrows 6inches deep. Dig a small hole in the bottom of the furrow and drop the potatoes into the hole, cover them lightly and leave the furrow open. As the potatoes grow, fill in the furrows, always leaving a few inches of your potato plant showing. When you have filled in the furrows hill up the potatoes in the same fashion above the surface of the soil creating a mound. The potatoes will form in the soil that is hilled up around the potato plants. Mulch the potatoes heavily as they grow.
