I just moved into this house about a month ago. There is a chest high leafy green shrub I want to know what it is so I know whether I want to keep it. Pinch a leaf between your fingers and see if it has a fragrance. I saw something similar that had a lemon like smell but can`t remember where. Not lemon balm.
It does not smell like lemon or like anything but a leaf to me really. It is starting to bloom, small clusters of small white flowers. I will take pictures of the flowers after it's done raining if I have time.

Someone on gardenwebs said Hydrangea paniculata, looks very much like the leaves on mine. Mine isn't blooming that well yet though.
Stormyweather, If you study the flowers very closely, yours do look like the Hydrangea paniculata (Panicled Hydrangea) The leaves certainly look like the Hydrangea I have too.
