Hi, on my travels during walking the dog, I have come across many of these bushes with berries that look very similar but not identical to Blueberries. The Blueberries that I know are always oval in shape with a large sepal(?) on the bottom, like that on an apple. The berries found on this bush appear more round (though this may be down to lack of ripeness) and are also missing the large round sepal on the bottom. However, colour wise the berry is exactly the same blue shade with the almost powdered surface as the Blueberry. Any ideas? I'd love if these were Blueberries as they're fast becoming my favorite fruit yet so expensive to buy in the shops! It looks like the blueberry bushes that grow over in east Texas, but there are other berries that have been mistaken for blueberries. We have several members who grow them, hopefully one will be able to give you a more accurate answer.
Thanks for the reply Toni, I actually stumbled across some more today and upon closer inspection saw that they looked very much like minature plums! Maybe I should just bite the bullet and try one..
They are sloes - blackthorns. Great for making sloe gin, horrid to eat. You usually wait until after the first frosts, then pick a load, fill a jar half full with sloes and cover with gin....wait a few months, decant, make a sugar syrup and sweeten to taste, and hey presto, yummy lishous sloe gin.
Ahh, at last! Thanks for the answer, although I'm really not a fan of Gin, so I'll probably give that a miss!
