I notice 5 leaves on my plant today that I removed that look like this. I have looked at it with a magnifying glass and can see no bug of any type and nothing moving. Idea's? ( photo / image / picture from carolo43's Garden )
First of all, is this a Syngonium (Arrowhead plant)? Are you worried about the little green spots on this leaf? Cause to me, they look normal, it's a variegation. Is it a lot different from the other leaves? Has the plant been moved recently? Or is it receiving plenty of sunlight? If the leaves continue to change, you could tap the leaf over a piece of white paper to see if anything shows up. (Bug parts, etc. ) Also check for a sticky secretion on all surfaces of the leaves, and any signs of webs in the leaf crotches. Good luck!
Yes, this is the arrowhead. I thought I noticed a very fine powder on the back of the leaves but even with a magnifying glass, can find no insects. The spots I was referring to are the brown spots all over the leaves, not the varigated pattern. I apologize for posting this in the wrong thread. Thanks to whoever moved it for me.
Hey Carolo43! The brown spots you see on your plant are actually exit points of an insect. Most likely it is a scale bug. They feed on the underside of the leaves and cause the spots to appear on the top. They are so small that they are unseeable to the human eye unless you have a microscope. They feed on new growths mostly but some do feed on the old ones. I hope this helps! BostonianChick
Carol, If it is scale bug, insecticidal soap (1 tblsp. soap like Ivory or Dreft, 1 tsp. vegetable oil, 1 pint of water, shake well and put in a spray bottle) will take care of them, but it may take two or more applications on both the top and bottom of the leaves, and on stems. You can also swab the leaves with a cotton ball dipped in alcohol. If it isn't scale bug, the two treatments I mentioned won't hurt the plant.
