I once had a bird feeder that I had to load handful by handful. One day as I was loading the first handful of sunflower seeds a chickadee not wanting to wait for me to finish loading the feeder, surprised me by landing on my hand, took a moment made its selection and then flew off to a nearby bush. Great shot! That reminds me of my friend Gary - he fed the birds and had the Chickadee's so tame they would eat out of his hand. It was amazing!
I once belonged to a bird club whose president published a book about feeding birds by hand. On walks in a local sanctuary during the winter months he would routinely feed chickadees, titmice and nuthatches. Chickadees were the only birds to be fed year round. The others were from November to March. Jerry
I had such a busy day yesterday. I ran out of the berries that I froze for the robins etc in Oct. so I was cutting grapes into 8 pieces for them. Had four veried thrush all day, and we usually only catch a glimpse of them in the garden, not on the seed table. Had about 16 different birds. Today the hummingbird food was frozen so as I wne out with two others they were feeding while I just stood there holding one up for them. Must get a close shot today as they sit on a little twig that I put up.
How sweet. The only thing I get from our similar-looking birds is a good scolding for being late with the breakfast.
