As you may (or may not) know, Peony's are my favorite flowers. They are very hardy, long lived, beautiful and fragrant. I have very fond childhood memories of my mother's Peony's which always bloomed just in time for my birthday. As I grew older and had gardens of my own, I always wanted Peony's and finally I have some of my own This 'Sarah Bernhardt' was just added this spring and is already blooming her little heart out This 'Festiva Maxima' came from a friend who knew I loved Peony's. I was able to split this into 3 plants that are all blooming beautifully this year This is the original Peony that my mother had growing in the backyard as long as I can remember. I do not know the cultivar. It starts off pink and then fades to white. It is VERY fragrant. This one came from a friends family farm. She said her grandmother must have planted them a very long time ago. THere were several large plants and the family hacked them back years before and they grew in their fields. This was one she dug out of the pasture for me - it filled an entire black garbage bag! It is also my avatar This one is an early bloomer and very fragrant. It has a tinge of yellow in the center This one came from a friend who had it for years and never did bloom. She gave it to me and I counted 48 buds on it this year! These 2 are tree Peony's given to me from friends. I had no idea what color they were until they bloomed for the first time this year. The last 2 are unknown Peony's at work. They are gorgeous and smell amazing! Do you think anyone would notice a tiny piece of each missing this fall? If anyone knows the cultivar name of my unknown Peony's please do share
I love peonies too. Mine are all the same color and not so beautiful as yours. I especially like the dark pink ones and one day will have to get one for myself.
Splendid Netty-- They are all just simply splendid. I especially like the last ones (the unknown ones). You must be over the moon with your beauties! Chapeau!
Oh Netty I love them too!!! Mine bring back memories of my grandma (isn't it funny how flowers stir your memory?) The only ones I have in bloom now are the dark red ones. Hopefully the pinks and whites will be open in time for my birthday! One year for my birthday my sis-in-law brought me a HUGE boquet and we sat it on the dining table before we went out to eat. We came home to find great big fat green caterpillars creeping along the dining table they must have hitched a ride into town in the middle of that boquet!
Those are gorgeous Netty! No wonder they are a favorite. I've never had any... and don't know if they would survive down here. But after seeing your photos, I WILL look into them. Beautiful!
Lovely selection of Poeny's Netty,..yes and i like them also,..its also nice to have them to remind you fondly of your mother and your childhood!,..i don't know the names of your last two unknown ones but here is a nice link. http://www.google.ie/search?q=Pictures+ ... d=0CCsQsAQ
Oh, drool! Your paeonies are delightful, all of them. I wish I could bury my nose in them, one after the other. I couldn't have picked a favourite but have a soft spot for heirloom paeonis. We have three (four?) old ones inherited from grandparents and aunts, and we've added a few new ones too.
Oh how beautiful, Netty! I didn't realize you have so many different kinds of peonies! That must be a beautiful display. Are they all together or spread here and there? My grandmother had peonies all around too... she called them "pineys" which always makes me smile to think of it. My aunt has the property now and I dug one of the "pineys" and brought it to my yard in the fall of 2009. It's grown huge, beautiful foliage both spring/summers since, but no blooms. I thought I had it planted too deep so I removed some dirt from it in the Spring. This year it had tiny little buds but they dried up and fell off.... I was disappointed. Maybe next year?
