I had to go to the local nursery today to buy some seed compost, and they are selling off their bulbs for 50p a packet instead of, in some cases, £3 a packet. So, as a gardener who can't resist a bargain, (can any of us?) I came home with a pack of white emperor tulips, 2 sorts of daffs, one multi headed, both frangrant and with pinkish trumpets...can't remember their names, and 2 foxtail lillies. I have planted this mass of bulbs in large clay pots and have put them out of the way against the house, watered them well, and will see what happens. Worse case, I bin them at the end of the season and am £2.50 down, best case, a mass of lovely colour for hardly any money at all. If only I had a crystal ball...if I could tell how they are going to do, I would go snap up the lot! p.s. Whilst planted the bulbs up, I also planted my 3 dahlia tubers, a mottled white and pink, a tiny dark pink, and a large yellow, and settled 8 large begonia tubers into damp compost to get them in the mood to grow. I also top dressed all of my other pots around the garden and will give them all a spring feed soon. The bluetits are in and out of the nest boxes, and the fox is still looking for a vixen, so I am convinced, spring is springing everywhere!
Oh, my, you certainly are going to have a lovely spring display! You "had" to go to the local nursery? Really? Chores and toil, the lot of the gardener . . . . At least the bulbs were a reward for all your travail!
Gosh you really got a great bargain with those bulbs EJ. I have a feeling that they'll grow well for you somehow. Do post some poics of them when they're in bloom so that we can all drool over them. :-D
NICEEEEE... I also bought two years ago some Eremurus (foxtail lily), two crowns in the package, but even though the middle looked OK, the roots were kinda dried out... I planted them, but nothing came out. but... GOOD LUCK with yours! CALIN
The Narcissus may well flower this season but they probably will not establish well as perennials. They form their root system in response to early autumn rain (in their native habitat) and if they miss that they do not always form a decent root system. They then flower on the strength of previous years food store, but not having good roots they then find it hard to build up strength for the future.
The nice part of a world community of gardeners is that we can enjoy the efforts of others while there is 3 feet of snow on the ground. Good luck with the bargain bulbs EJ.

Don't you just love end of season sales? Hope they at least show some green this year and maybe a bloom or two.
Nice haul, EJ-- I shall be very curious to see if they all come up. You have really done well. Signs of spring are here as well--I have green daff points peeking above soil level at the lottie now. Perhaps a centimeter.
