    Hi all,

Something strange has occurred with my onion seeds, that I hope someone can help me to understand.

Back in April, I purchased some Burpee onion seeds. When I opened the packet, there was another smaller packet inside with the seeds. It was silver lined, so I assume it was to keep moisture away from the seeds.

Anyway, I planted about half of the seeds indoors in a pot, and they quickly grew. Before long, it looked like I had a container of grass growing.

Last week I planted more of these same seeds, under the exact same conditions as the first time. Same soil, placed in the same window, etc. This time, not one seed germinated. :'(

Can someone shed some light on this problem? Could the seeds have degraded that much from April until now? I did re-seal the foil packet as best I could after I planted the first batch in April. Are onion seeds that sensitive?

    Thanks
    Tony

I have had onion seed that I had for a year before planting. I planted half and later planted the other half with no problems !! I see no reason why they would not have germinated !!

I think Onions are cool weather crops. The warm August weather could be slowing down germination.
Just a guess. I'm growing them for the first time this year.

They could just be taking longer to germinate if the window where they are is heating up surrounding air too much.

Onion seed for me is very fickle. I've opened packet & gotten good result the first planting, and zilch the second.

    Mart, Netty, and Coppice,

Thank you to all who offered advice.

After planting the seeds, I covered the container
with plastic. But perhaps this was not good, since,
as you folks mention, onions are a cool weather crop,
and the plastic causes more heat to be retained.

    Thanks again!
    Tony

That sure could be the reason for problems.
