August is usually peak time for Butterflies in TN. I think the cold winter, and the extreme heat & drought have taken a toll. I have not seen some of the varieties I usually see and the numbers overall are down. Here are some of my favorites I have taken. Red Spotted Purple ( photo / image / picture from gfreiherr's Garden ) This is the first one that has ever visited my garden. Red Spotted Purple...wings open ( photo / image / picture from gfreiherr's Garden ) Black Swallowtail ( photo / image / picture from gfreiherr's Garden ) Pearl Crescent ( photo / image / picture from gfreiherr's Garden ) Pipevine Swallowtail ( photo / image / picture from gfreiherr's Garden ) Sachem Skipper ( photo / image / picture from gfreiherr's Garden ) Eastern Tiger Swallowtail ( photo / image / picture from gfreiherr's Garden ) Gulf Fritilliary ( photo / image / picture from gfreiherr's Garden ) Great Spangled Fritillary ( photo / image / picture from gfreiherr's Garden )
They are all beautiful. You must be doing something right to attract such a variety. The Red Spotted Purple is a delight to see!
I'm glad you have so many butterfly varieties in your garden despite the weather conditions Gail. All are very beautiful and quite exotic to me.
What a wonderful and amazing assortment of butterflies you have floating around your area. You have taken such great pictures. I see some pics of the month in the future.
Thanks for all your comments. The butterfly activity has really slowed down with the drought and hot temps but I keep my camera handy if I see any in the garden.
Well Gail--you have outdone yourself this time. I just keep scrolling down and up and down and up, looking at those beautiful butterflies. There are some remarkable shots in there.
Beautiful flutters of color in your garden. Because of the heat and drought I have had a total of two butterflies in my garden since April. I have seen a Giant Black Swallowtail twice and a Cabbage White a few times in April and that's it.
Well captured Gail, i was listing my favorites and ended up with four,..then i realized i would end up listing them all,..however those Swallowtails are stunning.
Thanks Sjoerd, Toni & Phillip. The last few days all I have seen are skippers and sulfers. Some of the varieties I had last year did not show or I missed them. I have only had a few monarchs early in the season. Maybe I'll get some when they migrate south.
Gail--Beautiful butterflies, and you have captured them so well with your camera. Everything is in focus. Great job.
This week it seems like someone turned off a switch, I haven't seen any butterflys...I think they are leaving because we had some cold nights already. I don't remember ever not seeing them outside this early.
Sherry...ever since tropical depression Lee passed through I have not seen a butterfly. Yesterday I had one skipper, I usually have 50. It has been cool and rainy so maybe we will get some when it warms back up.
