Jack-in-th-pulpits start their lives as male plants. After 2 years, or longer in poor soil, they then turn into females which flower and bear seeds. If the plant receives a shock of any kind then it may turn back into a male again.

The Jack-in-the-pulpits begins as a male, then after 2 years, or longer it turns female. If it is shocked, the plant might turn back to male.

Jack=in-the-pulpit is an example of a monoecious aroid, the flowers are unisexual, in small plants most if not all the flowers are male, as plant ages and grows larger the spadix produces more female flowers. Does this make it a Jill-in-the-pulpit?
