Corn gluten meal for weed control.

Hi all: Know we all hate to use chemicals to control the weeds in our gardens. Wether they be veggie or flower. Has anyone tried or been using Corn gluten meal as a weed control? I have been using Corn gluten meal to suppress the weed seeds from sprouting in between my veggie rows. Work pretty good but it will also keep any seeds from sprouting. So I usually don't put it down in my veggie garden until the stuff has sprouted or I work it in carefully between the rows.
Also if you have annuals that reseed themselves it would not be good to use it in those areas. It would also be good to use in foot paths, cracks in your sidewalk or driveway. Just sprinkle some in the spring and in the fall when stuff is going to seed.

 

Tooty, I've never heard of it. Where can you get it?

 

Miss Liberty: The only place we have been able to find it is at our local Agriculture farm center. I just did a web search and did find a couple of places you can order it online from. If you have a good organic's store near you I would try and see if they carry it. I is great to put on your lawn in the fall to keep the weed seeds from sprouting. Plus it feeds your lawn also. I love using it. Hope that helps.

tootie, would love to get more details on this. Do you have much problem with mold and fungus in your area? There was some info a few years ago about stewbies trying cornmeal, but no further feedback on this. In some of the other blogs, there has been problems with mold developing. Both may have been using corn meal rather than high gluten corn meal.
Also, about how long does the suppression of seed sprouting last?

 

Karrma: I have a feeling that they were using cornmeal instead of the gluten. I like using cornmeal to kill cut worms and such in the garden. They love it and eat it but can't digest it. The gluten is in a more granular form than meal. I have not had a problem with mold or fungus. I would check online to see how often you need to reapply it. I think it all depends on your weather and weed seed sprouting time. I love using it to suppress those weed seeds. You can even use a spreader and apply it to your lawn as a weed suppressant in the spring and fall. We live in the country so putting it on our lawn would be a no win situation. But if I lived in the city I would rather use something natural than harmful chemicals. Hope that helps.
