I opened my doors this morning because it has cooled off here and a short while later I could smell smoke. I quickly checked through the house and found nothing so I closed my doors and listened to the news. They are reporting that Minnesota has some wild fires that have been burning for a month and the wind is just right bringing it to Wisconsin. It actually looks smokey outside.

I have a very sensitive nose....the neighbors have windows open and I am covering my nose and mouth going out to the mailbox... I guess it pays off to have a good sense of smell, I am sure this isn't healthy for you to be breathing in. Especially the young and the old.

I can't imagine what the people in Texas are putting up with with all of the fires...prayers for all.

Last night when I went to bed, the open window produced the same smell. I wondered about it, but found a post on Facebook from "newsofthenorth" (http://www.facebook.com/NewsoftheNorth) that explained all. It seems that near Eli Minnesota several thousand acres are on fire.

Our sunsets are reddish purple because of the smoke all over the state. I heard somewhere last week that the state is averaging 30 new wildfires every day. Some of them are small and easily put out grass fires but some spread to larger sizes.
We went to our local Lowe's last night, I bought some bulbs of course ;) and noticed that the field next to it was blackened by a recent grass fire. Bet they were nervous having it happen so close.

Contact wears are having a hard time seeing because of the air born particles getting between them and their eyes. Alergies are very bad because of the ash and pollen from burning trees in the air. I don't normally suffer from hayfever or plant alergies but my eyes are almost constantly burning, really bad this morning, and my sinuses are a mess.

There is a breeze that is keeping the air fairly clear but it is still in the air, sometimes you just can't see it. But you can smell it and feel it. Staying inside with the AC on is still recommended to the elderly or those with breathing problems.

And downtown Houston had almost zero visibility last week from the huge fire in Bastrop to it's west. http://houston.culturemap.com/newsdetai ... -building/

Sherry, I sympathize with you, and also thank you for your kind thoughts for Texas. I hadn't heard of the Minn. fires. Is there any information about what started it, or how much it is contained?
Tom, the same thing happened to us. We got up at 5 a.m. and immediately smelled smoke. We scanned the horizon for a glow, tried to determine the direction the smell was coming from, and then realized we were getting the smell and some ash from the Lake Whitney fire near Waco. Forty miles away as the crow flies, and when the wind was right, it smelled as if the next field was on fire!
Let's hope we are all safe from fire, flood, and things that go bump in the night!

I tried to find some more information besides facebook but I will check that out too. Just checked it out and I can't find anything.

Every link said you had to download something so I stay clear of those places. You would think with them telling us about the fires you could find more information on it.

    Thank you Toni...

I heard from the weather man that we will have bad air quality for a few days.

I agree with Toni about the smoke, wind and allergies. We stopped at the store for some antihistamine and they only had two boxes of our brand on the shelf. The pharmacy tech said everyone is having problems with it.
Now, the wind is picking up some and it's back to being hot. it was 102 when we were in town. My eyes are still a mess from the fires that were close to us on Labor Day weekend.

I don't know what was burning near me today, but there was a haze in the air and it smelled like smoke. I couldn't see a fire locally so I don't know where it came from. We had strong west wind today. It has set off my allergies badly! I doubt it was from Minnesota though...

Well, after watching today's news report it turns out that it WAS the fire from Minnesota!

The other day on my commute to work... through a concreted-asphalt jungle of a suburb with wall-to-wall shopping centers... I saw a woman throw a burning cigarette out of her car window and watched it bounce towards a "brown" grassy area. I wanted to just snatch her out of her vehicle and ... well... I won't say what my thoughts were.
And then today... fires in the "city" of Houston. And since there's been no lightning, it either had to be caused by faulty electrical work or a human (my bet is on the latter).
My heart goes out to anyone that is threatened by these fires.
It's bad enough when it's caused by Ma Nature... but losing everything because of a careless human?

In Arizona we were headed home on the freeway and passed firemen working on a fire in the median strip. Not a quarter mile down the road a big car passed us and the man flipped a cigarette out the window. We watched it roll into the grass spreading sparks along the way. Next time we came up the freeway there was a black patch where it had caused a fire. How can people be so careless? I did get the license plate number and turned it in to the DPS but the trooper said all they could do was send the guy a letter with information about the dangers of wildfires from cigarette butts and let him know someone saw him throwing his cigarette but out the window. If the trooper had seen it personally they could have charged him for putting out the fire.

Yikes I to yesterday couldn't believe that we were being effected by the smoke from the fire in Minn. which is 300 miles away from me here in Wis. But like Sherry8 we were. At first I thought that our neighbors had started their wood stove. Then I watched the morning news and they said it was from that fire.
They were warning people with lung and allergy issues to not do a lot out of doors. Because of the tiny particulates in the air that you can't see.

I to really feel for you folks that are in Texas. I'm continuing to praying that rain will fall so and that you and your loved ones are safe.

Dooley and Cherylad: I to can't believe how careless people can be. That guy and people like him need a swift kick in their you know what to wake them up. Maybe they have been kicked there a few to many times and now they have brain damage.

I thought maybe you meant from the neighbor's wood stove when I saw the title. I hope they get it out soon. Do you live near the lakes up there? My one son's inlaws live near Lake Superior on the Wisconsin side. Hopefully, they can at least get water to do water drops.
