I saw a program on our PBS station a few years ago about this, it was fascinating. When I have more time in the morning I am going to read all of the articles, I love it.

I would love to see this phenomenon for myself. I'd take my eldest son, Duncan, with me as he's got a fascination for archeology and the engravings would be of special interest to him. Is it OK if I pass the link to him Philip?

That is very interesting. Thanks for the link. I can only imagine what time was like when people discovered this phenomenon. Can you imagine the work that went in to building this and how long it took? Or am I wrong in thinking that this is a man made cairn. Ireland's history is quite interesting and phenomenal.

    Hi folks,

Eileen please feel free to give Duncan the link,or any of the links i post.

I was pleased to see the reaction to that link,..its bewildering and mind boggling when you are in one of those Cairns or Tombs,..you feel the atmosphere,..you become very aware you are connecting in some way to the ancient past of 5000 years ago,..and when you are told that these tombs were built before the Pyramids of Giza or the Great Sphinx of Giza,or twice as old as Stonehenge,..the penny drops,..i was always surrounded by archeology be it here at home or while stationed in the middle east,..so Egyptology became another interest,..but never a study,..there was no time to study under the conditions we lived,..most of you will have heard of the "Good Samaritan Inn",..as mentioned in most religious teachings,..its located many miles outside Jerusalem,..not much else around,..very sandy and desert like,..well an example of the study and conditions,..The Good Samaritan Inn was a Police Station when i took a stop there,..but the atmosphere could still be felt.

Last but not least is the Giants Causeway in County Antrim,Ireland,..formed 50 to 60 Million years ago.

    A very interesting site Philip.

It is amazing the abilities of people thousands of years ago to construct, with astonishing accuracy, the structures necessary for timekeeping and prediction. Then to have it fade into history only to be rediscovered again. I don't think we give ancient cultures all the credit they deserve. In some cases we find that our concepts and understandings were discovered long ago and then lost. I wonder what other ancient knowledge awaits discovery.

    Hi Jerry,
i am forever trying to figure out how did the ancients do things,..from construction,.. to preserving of food,.. to cooking of food,..waterproofing of clothing,..the list is endless,..now and then someone discovers how they did something way back and to find that even with our modern technology we were not as efficient as the old way.

That link i gave could entertain a person for quite some time,..and some things or places interest me as i have not managed a visit there as yet,..one place i have made a photo story of is "Clonmacnoise",..as we say here,..its a stones throw from where i live,..the name means "Meadow Of The Sons Of Nois",..it was founded in the year 548 by St Ciaran,..it was a settlement and has a Cathedral,Castle,Round Tower,Numerous Churches and Celtic Crosses.

Thank you so much for these postings. I have a good friend that is Irish descent, and these pictures are really cheering her up now, when she needed some good news. She is hoping to visit her grandparents homeland someday and these are now on her list.

It was nice to see and read the things published at the link which you provided.
We have structures like these featured here in Nederland and I have seen others in France as well as Spain. I find them and the people that built them extremely interesting.

Interestingly enough, I saw some structures in the american southwest similar to this, where small "coils" were chipped into stone in crevices and I was told that the Anasazi Indians did it for the same reasons as the people there in Ireland.
Apparently on certain days at certain times a shaft of light shown into the crevace and onto the coil and they then knew that the equinox was happening.

    Hi Karrma,
delighted to read that the links cheered up your friend at a time she needed it,..i hope she fulfills her hope of visiting the place of her grandparents,..its always so interesting seeing your roots.

    Hi Sjoerd,
there seems to be very similar structure, drawings, and stone carvings right across Europe,..but the most similar are the use of sun beams to tell the time and the events,..all fascinating,..those stretch right across the world,..there were some very clever people way back then.

    Hi Toni,
    great links,
i am about half way through looking at them,..Chaco Canyon is very interesting,..and the Mayan culture,..i was always drawn to finding out more about them,..thank you for those.
