Help! The leaves are falling off of one of our holly bushes. They are NOT turning brown or yellow but appear to be just fine BUT they are starting to drop off the lower branches. No bugs evident and no chew marks. Does anyone have a clue? :?:
Get a magnifying glass and look at the underside of the leaves. It might be spider mites. They are hard to see with the naked eye. I also have been able to spot them by spritzing a little water on the leaves, the drops gather on the webbing making it easier to see how infested a plant has become. Also...I see you are new...welcome to a great site.
Holly trees may start to drop their leaves due to environmental factors, like intense cold or extreme heat. Many broadleaved evergreens were affected here by the long period of cold weather last winter - the leaves didn't turn brown though but the lower ones simply dropped off. The plants survived and put out plenty of new top growth in the spring.
