well, I often squash bugs, but what variety are you wrestling with? Hardshelled or squishy or what sort?
Here's a mix that'll get that sorta bugs- Mix together 6 chopped cloves of garlic, 1 chopped small onion, 1 T. cayenne, 1 T liquid dish soap, and 1 qt. warm water. Let it sit overnight, strain it, and put it in a mist sprayer (I picked up one cheap at Big Lots, maybe you have a place like that too?)
I really gotta get more of those sprayers...

    Trap crops, and other traps

I planted radishes near my squash, and while bugs chewed the radish leaves to pieces they left the squash pretty much alone. I learned later this is a recommended method -- I discovered it by accident. :)

I then put up some yellow sticky-traps (sort of like fly paper for the garden) that drastically cut down on how much my radishes got chewed.

are we talking squash bugs, or cucumber beetles?
Squash bugs are very difficult to elimminate when they grow past the nymph stage. they look like small gray spiders at that stage.
prevention, and a good trap as mentioned by Anitra, is the best defense.

I know this is an older thread, but I still appreciate the advice. At my mom's place, we always used the sprayer to eliminate the insects, but I do not have the space for that kind of a sprayer, so I am always looking for a simpler way of dealing with the pests. Again, thanks for the information!
