How old is your oldest houseplant?

The oldest house plant I have is a hoya - we have had it for more than 10 years. About 4 years ago it started to blossom. As you can see there is also an aloe plant in the same pot. I hate to dig it out and disturb the hoya.

 

I don't think I've ever seen a Hoya before. Such a unique bloom!

 

I remember my grandmother had a hoya growing around her kitchen window when I was a child . I have always thought they had such unique blooms. Thanks for the memory.

 

I have a Christmas cactus that is 14 years old which was propagated from a 41 year old plant that my mom still has.

 

I am in awe of you that have had plants for so long! My oldest plants are not quite 10 and have been struggling the last couple of years. Do some plants just have a shorter lifespan than others?

 

I have so many old plants. I have added lots more pics to "my Garden" today.




These are just a few of my favorite ones. They are mostly over 20 or 25 years old.

 

What is that second one... a succulent of some type?

 

cherylad, That second plant is Agave "reggae time". It's been around for 25 years easy. He lives outside in summer and in the greenhouse in winter.

 

My oldest plant is not half as interesting as some of them here, but my oldest plant is a mother-in-laws-tonge (snake plant). The original plant belonged to my mothers great grandmother (my aunt thinks it goes back even farther). All of her children took cuttings and off-shoots from the parent plant. All of their children took cuttings and off-shoots from those clones, and this process has carried on until me. If you count asexual offspring to be the same age as the parent plant.....It's really old.. Not sure exactly how old though. It's not so much that age that makes me love this plant, but the realization that it is identical to the plant my great, great, great, (etc) grandmother grew!

 

I think it's wonderful to hear all these stories of these plants.

When my hubby and I go through the green house, sometimes we recall the trip or person or place we got a particular plant. It's heartwarming to know it's history. We enjoy our plants allot when they begin to grow after a good rest or give us the bonus flower or offspring.
