Hey, My girlfriend and I have made a number of vase setups like this using peace lilies. We put some small stones in the bottom, and have Beta fish living in the vases! Try it sometimes, its pretty spectacular when the plant is in bloom and you see the gorgeous male beta swimming around the roots!
My neighbor had a Beta fish with her peace lily too and it looked pretty nice, although she never fed the poor thing thinking whatever grew on the roots would keep it alive, ahhh, nope!
Yeah, that was our original thoughts. It can be difficult to feed them, but it is still necessary. Apparently though, they do nibble at the root every now and again. (As you said, this is not enough to sustain them!)
What a lovely idea, I would never have thought of that. The glass frog looks great and I too would leave out the fish and may be use them for another water display. I didn't know you could grow peace lilies in water, I might give that a try.
By adding a Betta, I would give you a little ecosystem. The fish could live off the land and the waste would feed the plant. The fish would be a happy camper. Barb in Pa.
I was told by a lady at the pet shop that Bettas like really clean water and that it's best to use bottled/purified or distilled water. Wouldn't the plant need some nutrients in the water? And would that harm the fish in any way?
Well, This pet shop lady would tell you that (ammonia) is not good for Bettas but algae or other natural things are ok. The smaller and more natural the place would make them (the male)happier as that is their breeding situation. They come from rice paddies in Thailand where is dries up and then floods. They are very happy with all these conditions as long as they have no ammonia with them. That will wreck their fins and burn their gills. Barb in Pa.
Hey, What is great is that is works as a little aquaponics system. The waste from the fish (mostly ammonia) will be converted by algae and bacteria to nitrites and nitrates. These will feed the plant. In the same way, as the plant is absorbing these wastes from the water, the plant gets a better, cleaner, environment! Win-win
