I have often wondered if people buy items priced like that or if they end up as ground meat in a few days.

We don't buy a lot of meat at store. Buy hog from friend. And share it with Sister's family.Jerry Deer hunts. And in past fish all summer long. Freeze lot of cat fish or bull heads. Spent this summer on ladder-painting. But we also had friend we would raise a steer. We would split feed cost. And we KNEW what was fed to them.Butchered it at His place. Made walk in cooler. Butcher block table. And SIL worked in meat dept. Gave some steaks to Sis-said never had any so good. But he passed away 2 years ago. 6 families would buy 6 young steers.

The prices at the stores are ridiculous these days! We have been eating less and less meat (who knows where its been and what it has been fed?) I can't wait until summer when I can grow my own veggies and buy local eggs again.

We are so fortunate! Friends raise grass-fed Angus and we always get some lovely beef, just for contributing to the processing cost. We have our own eggs, and eggs to share, and a very large vegetable garden that we can, freeze, and eat from, as well as giving quite a bit away. Neighbors are always calling to see if we can use a few fresh turnips, some greens, and other in-season vegetables. A friend fishes, and will trade a dozen bass fillets for a loaf of home-made bread (we both think we get the best of that deal!). Most of our grocery shopping is paper products and vegetables that we can't grow--like celery--and fruit. The cost of those items is utterly rediculous, too! But, we can't grow pineapples or toilet paper :( .

i hear you...i really have to shop around for the best prices, even on basics...i make as much as i can from scratch..i noticed a while back the price of beef was going through the roof, and even a chuck roast was expensive...don't eat much red meat, i've been thinking about learning how to cut up a chicken...never really done that. i have a grinder attachment for my mixer....guess i'll start using that too.

We too, eat less and less beef. We were blessed this past fall with a 1/2 of a beef that I ordered, and then the farmer gave it to us in exchange for help from Kevin and Adrian getting hay in. Now that was a blessing. Adrian also hunts, which helps some. I raise my own broilers, which in all reality is NOT cheaper than the store bought ones, but they do taste much better. With the garden, I spend far less on groceries than the average person and I still cringe going to the store. It is amazing, the cost of groceries anymore.

Afraid the Texas drought is one of the causes for higher beef prices. With no hay because of the drought, the ranchers couldn't feed them and had to sell them earlier in the season than usual, they weighed less than optimal for good prices and therefore there was less beef to send to market.

I always check the end of the meat counter where the 'Manager's Specials' are. Those are the meats that are coming very close to their sell by date and the prices are usually 1/2 to 3/4 off the original price. The sell by date is for the grocer only and has nothing to do with the quality of the meat after that date as long as it is kept frozen after that.

Annette, cutting up a chicken is the first thing I learned about cooking from my Mom....actually the only thing too. It is really easy, there are probably videos on YouTube to explain the process, everything else is on YouTube. ;)

In our cleaning business One of my 25 year customer. He owns a grocery store. I do get deals from them. But still nice knowing what my Hog or steer was fed.The hog we bought cost $120---it was $180 to have it butchered.I know lot of people are against Hunting deer. Here in Iowa county about 6-10 deer accidents per week. Have seen herds on 200 in Amana Colony. And that was in small field.
