Hi Everyone! I am back with another picture of a plant that appear in my garden. Its stem is hairy and the plant is soft. I am wondering if it has fruit, would it be edible? Thank you in advance and have a great day ahead to all the forumers here. Yep, Passionflower vine...or it will creep along the ground if it doesn't have anything to climb on. It is the host plant for the caterpillar of the Gulf Fritillary butterfly. Be sure to keep an eye out for them this summer.
Good morning, that very pretty flower belongs to the 'stinking passionfruit' or passiflora foetida, it has a bad odour and is poisonous to humans.A native to Sth America and grows rampant here in Aus. Dont let it reseed or it will mean you have to move out!Can someone else confirm this?
Ummmm, I have only found one site that mentions it being poisonous to humans most others say all parts are edible. And the stink appears to come mainly from bruised leaves. It can be invasive if it really likes it's growing conditions and it is on the Florida Invasive Plants list. It also is the host plant for the Gulf Fritillary butterfly.
Just a little more about the passion flower plant, only the ripe fruit is edible, the leaves and green berries are toxic and cause cyannide poisoning in cattle, just be very careful when you decide that the fruit is ripe or not.Because of these facts it is classed as poisonous plant . BE CAREFUL!
Thanks for all the replies on my photo. So far no fruits yet, got to keep an eye on it. It's great to know that this is a wonderful and lively community! From, WhirOfWings
