I have such a hard time keeping my mouth shut when I go grocery shopping and I see people putting diet anything in their shopping carts. I will not say anymore except to encourage you to check out the chemical sweetener Aspartame, and what it does to ones body when ingested. I know some people for health reasons eat stuff with it in. But after you read up on it I think you will throw away anything containing it. If you have or know of someone who drinks diet soda and has migraine headaches, encourage them to read up on the above sweetener. There are a few good natural alternatives available to use that are good for you.
I know I am HIGHLY allergic to formaldehyde...Which aspartame is converted to, in your liver. I don't feel very good if I accidentally get even a bite of something with aspartame in it. I am forever and a day asking "is this sugar free?" if I eat anywhere but off a menu or at home. You will not find any product with aspartame in my kitchen. Even that EMERGEN-C? health packet that you can buy has aspartic acid in it which does the same thing to me. YUCK!
This is a transcript of a lecture given by a lady to the Faculty Club of University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in 1997 http://webhome.idirect.com/~wolfnowl/aspartame10.htm When I can find the site that lines out everything that aspartame has been documented to cause in humans, I'll get it posted too.
Toni sounds good to me. Will be looking forward to the link. Carolyn & Sherry8: Glad to see you know about how bad it is for you. They put it in a lot of stuff you would never even think of. Like baby and kids chewable vitamins have it in. Go figure. I am so glad that you both know how bad that stuff is. There is a great book on the subject of Aspartame if anyone wants to read up on it. It's titled "Sweet Poison by Janet Starr Hull. It is a great read and her battle to regain her health after having Aspartame poisoning.
yipe! Anyone know anything spooky like this about sucralose? I really hope not, I'm a "sweets" junkie with a family history of diabetes & really like this stuff.
I was reading an article about how bad Splenda is, Ill see if I can find it again. Not that I even use sugar substitutes to begin with (if you want sweet, why cheat yourself? heh)... Added: This isnt the article I was reading, but it has the same basic stuff. Really makes me want to try and reprogram my body to not crave sugar! http://www.womentowomen.com/healthyweight/splenda.aspx
Bip, That is a most informative article also. Thanks for the link. (not that I eat any of these sweeteners except a teeeeny bit of stevia)
CritterPainter if I were you I would look into a more natural sweetener like Stevia, or Blue Agave, or rice syrup. There are quite a few natural sweeteners that you probably could us safely. I would read up on them. TheBip: yes that was a great article. Thank you for the link. It can be hard to break the sugar craving. It is like and addiction for some peoples bodies. Personally I cut all sugar amounts in half when making cookies and such. I use only organic sugar, Blue Agave syrup, Apple sauce, or molasses when I can for a sweetener substitute in stead of sugar. I have tried the rice syrup but do not like the taste. In the Bible there is a really interesting verse. It's God speaking to His people and He say's; My people perish for lack of knowledge. Boy if that isn't so true. We need to be our own health advocates and become knowledgeable on what we are putting in our bodies. I know it's hard to do sometimes but it's really good time spent and saves you money in the long run.
I can't help but wonder why so many folks have to have so much food that tastes sweet. You don't need artificial sweetener if you learn to like the taste of food as it is, naturally. A lot of it is the way we were raised and bad habits of long duration are harder to break. Not like I'm just being cruel, but eat less, burn more is the only equation that works in the end.
I will check this out. My Big Guy-now getting smaller is on a diet. But been buying fresh fruit. Have to check yogart out I have been buying. Having oatmeal in am+ I add raisins. Glad when it gets warmer fresh veggys from garden. But he's walking even more. A little over year old yellow lab + 11 year old Viszla.
Rockhound, I truly believe that sugar and fat are addictions for our bodies...(kind of like Mc Donalds)...you crave that product and the more you feed it the more it wants..I also wonder if our body is lacking some thing important and we "graze" in search of the missing nutrient creating or enabling the cycle.
It is strange seeing Jerry looking -what calories some things have in them. Those little apple pies -500. So he's eats more apples. He LOVES cookies-so get graham crackers.
Koszta-glad to hear that your honey is wanting to loose weight and get more fit. It is definitely a battle when our bod's crave those bad for us foods. Yes do check out the yogurt if it says diet or low calore on it, it contains Aspartame. One time when my honey when to the store and saw a good deal on low calore yogurt and bought 10 small containers. When he got home we checked the ingreds and sure enough. Aspartame was in them. So they went into the trash. You really need to read the labels on food. Carolyn--like you said. They are addictive. Both fats and sugars. One thing the artificial sweeteners do like Aspartame is make you crave carbs. More carbs more weigh even though you have cut out the sugar. I know my body is lacking in minerals when I crave dark chocolate more than my usual liking. So now I have liquid mineral drops that I can put in my juice to boost my mineral intake. Our bodies do tell us what they need but we don't always know what it is. So like you said-we graze. More grazing on bean sprouts would be really good for us. They are little power houses of nutrition and so easy to grow.
But don't go overboard on fruit either, it has it's own sugar and no protein (or very little) Without protein you will be hungry again pretty soon and grab another piece of fruit and the cycle will continue through the day. If you are restricting calorie intake and eat a lot of fruit. you fill up your daily allowed calorie intake leaving not much room for cheese, meat, beans, milk, eggs....all those foods that your brain needs to work efficiently. Orange - 62 calories Banana -105 Pear - 96 Peach - 38 Apple - 95
