Marigolds by seed Eileen ~ I gather from your "free seed give away" post that you have experience with growing flowers from seed. Perhaps you can help. I have attempted harveting seeds from marigolds to try and grow my own; however, I can't seem to figure out where the seeds are. A friend of mine told me to let the flower head dry out before dead-heading the plant, and that the seeds are under the petals. I actually planted the entire dead flower head in some soil to see if it would grow. How, exactly, does one go about harvesting marigold seeds???? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Felicia (Michigan)
Hi Felicia, So sorry I didn't get back to you sooner but I've been posting my seeds off to members and it took longer than I expected. What I do with my marigolds to collect their seeds is: When the flowers have faded I get a paper bag, slip it over the flower head, cut the stem and then seal the bag and give it a good shake. All the seeds should then fall out into the bottom of the bag and the flower heads can then be removed. I hope this helps you to collect the seeds so that you can grow your own in future.
Sorry folks but my seeds have all gone now. Hope you all received the ones I sent out without any problems.
Hi Felicia! I don't have much trouble with marigolds, but don't know if there is a time for harvesting that is more effective, when the flower is fading vs dried ... but when your flower bud is relatively dead and dry, just pinch off the head and grip your dry 'petals' in one hand and pull while holding onto the other end .... At the end of the season, I pull off all the heads and drop them into the soil and cover with the spent plants. Then it returns next year, self mulched and ready go to!
free seeds! if you have any seeds left that will grow in South Florida ,I'd love to try and grow them. I'll look for your reply.
A huge request I know, but if you could keep me in mind next time you have some wildflower seeds, I'd really appreciate it. My favorite aunt moved here from Scotland when she was a young girl, now she has a terminal condition that is taking her away a little at a time, I'd love to plant some wildflowers for her! Thanks, Mary
Re: Marigolds by seed Hi Felicia, I realize your question is a month old or so, but if you are still reading, the marigold seeds look like this: Just hold a dried up flower head between the thumb and index finger and squeeze the head as you roll it between the fingers. It should fall apart and yield hundreds of seeds. You can just sprinkle the seeds onthe ground or bury them up to maybe 1/4 inch deep. They sprout/grow fairly easy.
hello eileen. took a look at the list and had them searched on google. hehehe. i am new around. not quite one hour old. and here i am asking for things. i am not sure you can ship this far - all the way to romania. we can try? i really like the brugmansia pictures i've seen - we have some here, usually with white or yellow flowers. if you have other colors - punk or maybe red if there are any - i'd like to try and plant. also i like the chilean glory vine... red? yummy. let me know. calin
Hi Calin. I'm afraid I don't have any seeds left at the moment and Im not sure what the regulations are about posting plant materials to Romania. :-? However, I'm sure that there are members here who could possibly help you out. :-D
