I read about this in last months mother earth magazine.

The basic concept is you plant veg like asparagus, ground nut etc as a permanent vegetable crop coming back each year.

I must admit other than my soft fruits and herbs, i don't think of veg as perennial.

But after reading the article i think i will give it more thought and possibly start sneaking some into the wifes flower beds...

If you're looking to get more produce out the garden with less effort its worth a read.

    the article is online herehttp://www.motherearthnews.com/organic-gardening/perennial-vegetables-zm0z12amzkon.aspx

What is a ground nut ? Most vegetables are not perennial but asparagus would be good one to have. A lot would depend on if they reproduce and rejuvenate from seed or root. I will have to read that article. Love Mother Earth News.

In some places "ground nut" means the same plant as what we in the USA call Peanut. The other ground nut(Apios americana) is a climbing or sprawling vine that makes brown flowers and strings of small tubers. It is a perrenial plant in the sense that it will live several years but if you dig it all up to harvest the roots you need to plant back some of them.
