I've been watching this "weed" for a while now. And since today was "weeding day #2" I decided I'd go ahead and yank it out. But... I felt bad about it. It's so pretty! The stalk is triangular and thick (Perhaps 1/4 inch?)... reminded me of a palm for some reason and it was at least 3 foot tall. But the little "rosettes" forming a circle is what caught my attention.
So before I tossed it out in the driveway for the sun to bake the life out of it... I took some photos.

    Or...is this something worth keeping?

    Stay away

That is a bane of mine. I think it's a type of nutsedge.

Bliss... I do believe you are correct. An online image/info search confirms that it's a nutsedge.
I seriously thought about putting it in a container. What is it with me and weeds this year?????

I thought it looked like something I have. I Googled nutsedge and it must be in the same family that I thought it was. Papyrus. C. giganteus = Umbrella Palm
    Cyperus. They both look close.

    It's probably the weed. :p

Barb, I thought BOTH of those, but thought..Naw..I was wrong so I passed on by with a guess. Our nutsedge doesn't get quite this big. And papyrus, I thought, was a water plant...

Cheryl, Although it looks cool, QUICK...get it out, it will leave "nuts" in the ground to form new plants. dig and pull. dig and pull. :-x

I was thinking I would like to live just a little farther south for the winter wouldn't be so cold, but after this year and how warm it was I am thinking the weeds aren't worth it....I have never seen so many and varied weeds as what I have found so far this year.

I have left it laying on the gravel driveway so the sun will bake it's roots to death before I toss it in the "weed/burn pile". :'(
Since everything that's not protected in a flower bed gets mowed, I don't and can't worry about every weed. I just find some of them pretty. You oughta see the juncus I've left growing in the front daylily bed for years... just because of it's contrast.
    I think I need help.

I want you all to know that I have this "weed" in a pot that sits next to a tree for 3 years now. It has never flowered so I don't worry to much if it is a weed but I really don't know what it is. My point is until you are sure if you like something you could save it that way.

Btw, papyrus can live in a dirt setting and not only water setting. Not sure how to word that.

Barb... are you trying to convince me to go out there with a flashlight and save it? :D
I really did consider putting it a pot. But I've transplanted enough weeds to "safe" areas this year. Maybe if another shows up, I'll let it hang around.
And I recently was on the receiving end of some Papyrus. I have some "standing" in one of the water lily container ponds. And more just in the dirt. The one's in the water is thriving while the other is just "doing okay".

I have areas in both the front and back garden where I put plants I am not sure of. I let them grow until I can make a definite ID then either plant them in the garden or throw them out.

With Papyrus you can make your own paper :) but I would not use it in your printer. :-(

It is pretty Cheryl, but so are thistle. I used to have those in my garden at the old house. They are very troublesome with their spiky/thorny stems. So hard to get rid of, but so pretty to look at. I had something something similar as your above. I too pulled it and left it to die.

I kinda regret pulling it... but if another shows up, I may just save it.

Certainly an attractive plant be it a weed,..and i would be in the same boat as you Cheryl i do keep some weeds because they are attractive,..in fact i have a little beauty at present and am fighting my conscience as to dispose or keep,..if i pull it up i just might get out of bed with flash lamp at the ready and retrieve it.
