Very stupid! After spending years telling people to keep their mint in a pot because mint runs, I just planted spearmint in the ground. I know, I know, in about two months I'll be complaining about having to rip mint out of the lawn. Y'all will be within your rights to tell me, "I told you so! You knew better!" A neighbor gave me some spearmint, and it wouldn't all fit in the pot I had, and, well . . . . Stupid is as stupid does, and I did.
There's still time to dig it up and plant it in your community garden. There would be enough for everybody. dooley
I'm still pulling Chocolate mint (from a friend) out of the garden. I only put it in until I found a pot big enough for it ... and forgot all about it. I won't be making THAT mistake again. Now all my mints are in pots in the greenhouse so that I can keep an eye on them.
Jane, it smells so nice when you mow. don't worry about it. I mow mine down everytime I mow around the deck.
We sometimes walk around a reservoir that has an area close to the water with mint. Walking through the 50' x 80' area leaves the air and shoes smelling great. I always make sure we walk though it. Jerry
We have lots of mint. But not any near the flower beds. So..... let 'em grow until it's time to mow or weed whack 'em. Plus, "the dragon" loves them to make Mojitos. Gotta keep the dragon happy, right?
I love my peppermint but I do keep in a big pot. How does chocolate mint smell and taste? I want to plant some this year.
I have lots of chocolate mint and so far it hasnt really annoyed me (had it for about 4 years I think). I just pull it up when it starts running through otehr plants, but otherwise I like the smell of it so I ignore it. The other day I took 12 cuttings from it. Once they grow roots Ill offer em to anyone who wants one Also bought some Apple mint a week ago. Cant wait till its big enough for cuttings
Everyday-Vegetables Chocolate Mint is a wonderful peppermint plant that smells just like chocolate and has some sweetness too. I use it chopped up with fresh, ripe strawberries but it makes a great tea too and lovely ice cream.
I have a similar situation, except I think the people that lived there before me planted the mint. It takes over the garden, but it's nice to know that whenever we need mint it's always available :-D
Listen to our love-hate relationship with mint! It does have a lovely scent and summer is not summer without it. It is great to be able to step outside and clip some for ice crean, a drink, a recipe. I have always grown mint somewhere at each of the houses I have lived in, but it is true that if you are not careful, you can rue the planting of it!
I was planning to grow peppermint and spearmint this year which is a first. Glad I found this thread as I was think where in ground I would plant it. Does it really grow that fast to become a problem? Any recommended size for pot planting? Sounds like it would make a tasty and great smelling ground cover.
Hi Busted... yes it grows quickly and spreads just as fast. I have some by the back faucet and it can just grow all it wants. I just mow it down when I think it's getting out of hand. So, if you have a spot like this where you don't mind what it does, I say plant some. BUT... if you're worried about it getting into flower beds, etc, a container would be best. I'd imagine any mid-to-large size container should work.
