We have lived in the same house for 14 years now. Before that we moved every 2-3 years. Here's what our home looked like when we purchased it. I believe we yanked out the row of hedges in front of the house on the first day. The rosebush in front of the porch was ugly, it may have reverted back to it's rootstock. It got dug out too.

    And our house today...

We're painting the house later this summer, and I think I'm going to keep the colors the same. I'd considered updating the wrought iron porch supports to something more modern, but I'm going to keep them...it's 60's retro and I kind of like it.

I love befores-and-afters. What a difference you have made to your home. It looks so friendly and inviting.
I think every home had those porch supports or something very similar. The one's that used to be here had oak leaves and acorns. I saved a couple pieces of it. They sure had character... much more than then plastic column that's there now. Your's would make an awesome trellis.
Anyhow... great job and thanks for showing your lovely home. :stew2:

You've made some lovely changes to your home. The garden is very inviting as is the porch. I can see myself sitting there with a good book on a summers night.
I think you're right is keeping the iron porch supports as they add to the overall appearance of the house and make it welcoming. I would stay with the colours you already have too as they're not harsh like the white of the first photograph and compliment the garden space.

I wanted a color change, as the house we left was white.

Very nice change Netty! What color is your house now? I ask because we were thinking of going a blue/greenish gray to match our roof.

The back of the house (shown) is still green and will stay that was as it is vinyl siding. The front is brick.
I was thinking that your house would look great in a dark bluish/gray!!

Pianolady Very very nice changes. You did good.

Netty, Wow that's a great improvement. Now I have to see if I have any photos of our front yard.

I've been going thru old photos for a project and came across this one... just had to share my before-n-after.
This is probably one of the first photos of our house when it was built (April 1958 -- 5 months before I was born). That's my sister in the photo.
