Well friends its question time again. I have a snake plant QUITE big and was going to split up and make 2. The other night I walked out on balcony and smelled the most beautiful smell. It turns out my BIG baby has given forth with 8 blooms that smell great and are giving forth its sap? Now the question, and I think I know the answer is not to do anything till the blooms are gone. This along with the cactus are my oldest plants. Im getting better with the new moisture meter. MaRT THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELp ed Snake Plant blooms ( photo / image / picture from Edlou8181's Garden )
Ed, That is so very neat that you have a snake plant blooming. It has always been told to me to wait till anything is finished blooming unless it's an emergency. Barb in Pa.
Good advice Barb. I wouldn't split the plant until the flowers have faded and died right back either.
Unless the pot falls off the shelf and shatters into a million pieces. Then you can split it off and give them their own pots. :-D :-D Barb in Pa.
You must be doing something right Ed as I too have never seen a snake plant bloom. I have had mine 'forever' and no blooms. Nice pix. Jerry
So I take it that the snake plant blooms smelled beautiful that evening. Does it smell during the day or only at night? Barb in Pa.
Snake Plant Scent Barb Im generally in bed right after dinner as there is nothing to do here but listen to little kids yell and continue to kill the small tree out front. SO I retreat inside and close my doors. But the other night it was 10 Pm and quiet out so I wandered out and then when I caught the smell. I just checked and the smell is still out there, but not as strong. ed
When I received my snake plant in a trade, it came in a bubble envelope with the top cut off to fit the envelope. While cleaning one day I bumped a "leaf" and it broke off. I made a "furrow" with my finger and stuck the "leaf" into it. Both grew the broken piece and the spot where I broke it off. I would probably wait for it to finish blooming to split it. Maybe they don't bloom until the pot is full of plants. I know my pot was full of plants when it bloomed. The fragrance is strong at night. This was my plant several years ago. I have a hoya wrapped around mine. Don
They produce the smell then the bug, they are attracting, is awake. So some bugs are only out at night so the flower only produces smell at night and for the day bugs that's when you smell the flowers in the day. Flowers are so smart....... Barb in Pa.
Ed, You might be interested to know that if you plant is outside, the sugar in the nectar your seeing is something moths just love to sip on, not to mention an ant or two :-D
I would,BUT I live in an apartment on the 2nd floor, and plants I planted downstairs other neighbors ripped out. Everything stays up here with me. Thanks for the info and the plant is blooming again,Lovely smell. ed Little baby ( photo / image / picture from Edlou8181's Garden )
Sansevieria flowers only when VERY potbound and kept in good light. Disturbing the roots (repotting, dividing) while in bloom may cause the flowers to die back prematurely, but will not otherwise affect the health of the plant. ~Will
